Christmas is a time of year commonly associated with joy, friendship, family and celebration. However, it can also be a challenging time for some, particularly those struggling with mental health problems.
The festive period can lead to some individuals feeling isolated and alone. The awareness that this time of year is traditionally spent with family and friends, can worsen existing feelings of loneliness. Christmas can also cause financial stress. The expectation of giving gifts to those close to you, can increase pressure on already limited resources and lead to feelings of inadequacy if unable to provide the gifts desired.
This year, these problems are likely to be further worsened due to the impact of COVID-19. Large family gatherings may not be able to take place in the same way as they previously have. Plus, many more people will be facing financial instability this year due to the impacts of lockdown, which will make affording Christmas presents even harder. It is important to remember to support each other and reach out to those who might be finding this time of year challenging.
It seems that we could all do with some festive cheer to brighten our days during this time of uncertainty.
