HIIT and Mental Health

Exercise is known for the positive impacts it has on physical health, but benefits of exercise go beyond just your body. The endorphins released through exercise are known to improve mental health by reducing anxiety, depression, and stress.

Although sticking to a regular exercise schedule isn't easy, and finding the motivation can be challenging - the long-term impact of regular exercise can contribute to increased levels of self-esteem and confidence.

If you’re unsure where to start or you are struggling to find motivation, then our new HIIT with Alice classes might be for you!

You might be thinking “but what is HIIT?”

Well, our Level 3 qualified Personal Trainer, Alicee Colnaghi as all the answers.

“HIIT stands for high intensity interval training, so classes are typically shorter but very intense! This is great as it means you don't need to spend hours slaving away in order to get a great workout in, and the short intervals keep things fresh and exciting. The class is typically 45 mins to an hour long, and includes both a brief warm up and cool down, as well as a run through of all the exercises, so that everyone is fully prepared and knows what to expect.”

And here’s a little bit more about Alice

As well as being a qualified personal trainer she is also a full time student at Heriot Watt University studying Psychology. She loves fitness (obviously) , I'm always looking to learn new things and I enjoy

walks with my friends and knitting/crochet! Alice took up teaching for Mind's Well because she has struggled with depression and anxiety for many years.

“As cliché as it sounds, I found exercise really does help manage my symptoms. I wanted to see if I could use my experience and expertise to help other people to enjoy fitness, especially as options are now limited due to lockdown.”

What you need to know for the class

1. Alice sends an email to everyone who signs up to the class every Friday (or sometimes Saturday depending on her schedule)

2. The email includes the full written up workout for the following Monday, and will inform you if there is any equipment needed. (Saying this, equipment used is limited as we are all working out from home and no one is expected to have a full gym kit or anything, don't worry! It is generally just a weighted object of some kind, it could even be a milk bottle or cans of beans! And I always include a non-weighted version)

3. The class is designed to be fully inclusive for everyone.

The benefit of emailing the workout also is that you have a copy of each week's workout, so if you want to give it a go again later in the week, you have it all written out ready to go!

Bring yourself and be ready to sweat!

A final note from Alice: “I encourage everyone to let me know how they found the class and to get in touch if they need anything at all, either via email at amcolnaghi@mac.com or they can text me on 07713021717. I want it to be more of a collaborative effort rather than me just telling the class what to do, so the more feedback I get the more I can improve the class week on week!”
